Who are The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors?
RICS is a globally recognised professional body that promotes the best standards for valuations, developing and managing land, real estate, construction and infrastructure, considered the "gold standard" in professional property regulation worldwide.
History
The Surveyors club can be traced back as far as 1792. But seventy-four years later, in London (1868), a group of just 20 surveyors met at the Westminister Palace Hotel in London. The chairman John Clutton appointed a sub-committee to draft resolutions, bye-laws and regulations. In doing so, they established a professional surveyors association to represent surveyors within the growing property profession.
In 1881 the association received a royal charter and was founded as the Institution of Surveyors, and then in 1947, it became The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. From a group of only 20 surveyors, RICS has grown to have over 134,000 members in over 150 countries.
Mission
RICS want to ensure the development of buildings and spaces is fit for current and future generations that will use them. Considering that properties in use today can be hundreds of years old, you want them to be safe to use. At the same time, getting the most from properties and spaces should not come at a cost to the planet, so sustainability is also an essential part of the institution's mission.
